Não arrisque o mármore temerário
tagarelas transgressões ao todo-poder do esquecimento,
enumerando todo prolixo
o nome, a opinião, os eventos, a pátria.
Tanto enfeite bem exibido está às escuras
e o mármore não fale do que calam os homens.
O essencial da vida fenecida
- a trêmula esperança,
o milagre implacável da dor e o assombro do gozo -
sempre vai perdurar.
Cegamente reclama duração a alma arbitrária
quando a tem segura em vidas alheias,
quando tu mesmo és o espelho e a réplica
dos que não alcançaram o teu tempo
e outros serão (e são) tua imortalidade na terra.

gárrulas infracciones al todopoder del olvido,
enumerando con prolijidad
el nombre, la opinión, los acontecimientos, la patria.
Tanto abalorio bien adjudicado está a la tiniebla
y el mármol no hable lo que callan los hombres.
Lo esencial de la vida fenecida
---la trémula esperanza,
el milagro implacable del dolor y el asombro del goce---
siempre perdurará.
Ciegamente reclama duración el alma arbitraria
cuando la tiene asegurada en vidas ajenas,
cuando tú mismo eres la continuación realizada
de quienes no alcanzaron tu tiempo
y otros serán (y son) tu inmortalidad en la tierra.

Let not the brash marble risk
prattling infractions against all-powerful oblivion
tediously commemorating
the name, opinion, events, and country.
Such beads are best ascribed to darkness
and the marble should not say what man forgets.
The essence of the departed life
--tremulous hope,
the implacable miracle of pain and the shock of pleasure
will always endure.
The arbitrary soul blindly demands duration
when it has it assured in the lives of others,
when you yourself are the realized continuation
of those who didn't reach your time
and others will be (and are) your immortality on earth.
